Migrate to a new PC

There are many ways to migrate data to a new PC, but since we get asked this a lot so here's what we suggest.

The two simplest methods to migrate data to a new PC is either via the PDA or by performing a Database Export and Import through the Times Desktop application (V1.4 and above).

Migrate via the PDA

Data for a single user can be moved from one PC to another by using the standard Sync routines. Here are the steps:

  1. Perform an Download Override Sync from your existing PC to your PDA
  2. Check that all your data is on your PDA
  3. Backup the Times.sdf file from your PDA \Program Files\Times to your PC as this contains all your data
  4. Install Times Desktop and all components to your new PC
  5. Open Times Desktop and create the new database (see Times Desktop User Manual install instructions)
  6. Exit the Times Desktop application
  7. Setup the SQL Port and PC firewall as required. Refer to forum http://www.comit.com.au/dnn/Forums/tabid/85/forumid/2/threadid/10/scope/posts/Default.aspx
  8. Open Times on your PDA and change the preferences for the Server to point to your new PC
  9. IMPORTANT: Set the Sync preference on your PDA to Upload Override. If you forget then you may delete all the data on your PDA and have to start again.
  10. Perform a Sync with your new PC, you should see all the data uploaded from the progress status on the PDA
  11. If you receive errors during the sync, refer to the FAQ section of the Times User Manual and the forum
  12. After a successful Upload Override Sync you can change the Sync preference back as required
  13. Open Times Desktop again and select the required User ID, you should now see your data
  14. Remember to register the new PC using the same name and serial key as the existing PC

If you need to upgrade the version of the PDA software during this process then between steps 3-4 perform the following:

  1. Uninstall Times and all SQL components from your PDA, your datafile will remain on the device
  2. Download the same version of Times as you will be installing on the new PC from our website product page.
  3. Install Times and all components to your PDA
  4. Start the Times application, your datafile will be upgraded
  5. Continue from step 4

Migrate via the Times Desktop

To migrate via the Times Desktop you need to be running version 1.4 or above. The following steps show how to export and import the data between two systems. Note this process deletes all data on the target/new PC before importing.

  1. Open Times Desktop on the existing PC and logon with an admin user (the default Times user is an admin)
  2. Click on Tools/Export Database and select a folder to store the exported file
  3. Click Save to start the Export
  4. Install Times Desktop and all components to the new PC
  5. Open Times Desktop and create the new database (see Times Desktop User Manual install instructions)
  6. Copy the exported file from the old PC to the new
  7. On the new PC use the Tools/Import Database menu and select the export file
  8. Click Open to begin the import
  9. Once complete click refresh on the toolbar or restart the application to see the imported data
  10. Setup the SQL Port and PC firewall as required. Refer to forum http://www.comit.com.au/dnn/Forums/tabid/85/forumid/2/threadid/10/scope/posts/Default.aspx
  11. Perform a Download Override sync to your PDA from your new PC to reset the data on your PDA.
  12. After a successful Download Override Sync you can change the Sync preference back as required

Remember to refer to the user manuals for install and FAQ details.
