There are a number of ways to transfer the Times Desktop database and application to a new PC. If you are familiar with SQL Server then all you need to do is install the same version of Times Desktop to your new PC and backup and restore the SQL Databases from your old PC. By default all data is stored in the Times database, but you may have used a different database name and separated the security and data databases. You will also need to point your PDA to your new PC and possibly reset the SQL logon security.
If you are not a SQL expert then we recommend your use your PDA to transfer data between the old and new database by following the steps below:
1. Perform a sync with your existing PC and ensure all data is up to date on your PDA
2. On you PDA make a backup of the Times.sdf file located in the \Program Files\Times folder as this is now the master of your existing data.
3. Ensure you have Active sync installed on your new PC and that you can sync with your PDA
4. Install Times Desktop on your new PC http://www.comit.com.au/ppc/times Follow the install instructions in the manual.
5. If you previously set SQL Server to use a fixed port then we recommend you do this again on your new PC
6. Update any firewall settings necessary to permit the Times PDA software to communicate with your new SQL Server
7. Open Times Desktop on your new PC and check the version number (in the Help About form)
8. If the Times Desktop version is later than your PDA Times version you will need to download and install the current Times PDA version
a. Download the latest version from http://www.comit.com.au/dnn/ProductsandServices/PocketTimes/tabid/77/Default.aspx
b. Extract the setup zip file and run CESetup.exe
c. Follow the prompts to reinstall Times Professional to your PDA (note all data will be retained)
9. Open Times on your PDA
10. Open the Preferences form
11. Select the Server tab
12. Update the Server name to point to your new PC (and port if specified)
13. Click OK to same the settings
14. Change the Sync type to Upload Override
15. Click sync.
16. If you received any errors review the connection settings to your PC and any firewalls. Refer to the Connection Issues during Sync thread for possible solutions
As long as you have a backup of the Times.sdf file after performing the initial sync your data can always be recovered in the event of a problems.
